Biotechnology is now recognized as one of the most important sectors of the economy that can ensure sustainable industrial development, increase competitiveness, reduce investment, reduce the amount of pollutants emitted into the environment, as well as allows for remediation of contaminated areas. The area of biotechnology is divided into four departments (according to the guidelines adopted by the organization EuropaBio):

White - Industrial biotechnology uses biological systems in industrial production and environmental protection. It is based on biocatalysis and bioprocesses.
Red - biotechnology used in health care, particularly for the production of new biopharmaceuticals, the development of genetic diagnosis or gene therapy and xenotransplantology.
Green - biotechnology related to agriculture including the use of genetic engineering to improve crop production and livestock.
Purple - associated with legislation that refers to biotechnology (legal and social conditions.)
These four branches of biotechnology are very closely related to each other and are based on the dynamic development of science and engineering. Both the scientific potential as well as access to natural resources enables the development of these areas of biotechnology in Poland.

The area of the platform activity is sustainable development for bio-processes, particularly R&D in the area of new chemicals, the production of both low- and high bulk, biopharmaceuticals, modern drugs, diagnostic tests, functional food ingredients and additives and based on biocatalysis more pure processes.
